IRENA - Istrian Regional Energy Agency Ltd. is the Lead Partner of the project. It is an independent non-profit organisation founded in 2009 and owned by the County of Istria. The main goals of the Agency include improvement of energy efficiency, energy savings in public and private sector, the use of renewable energy sources, cogeneration and environmental protection.

Areas of activity comprise of the promotion of innovative materials and technology use in energy savings, education and public consultation on the use of local energy resources, organisation of conferences, gatherings, workshops, contacts, cooperation and cooperative approach and partnership with ministries, local, national and international municipalities, regions and agencies, funds, the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, United Nations Development Programme, EU funds etc.

Other activities also include the implementation of national energy programmes, the preparation, development and implementation of programmes and projects in the area of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, the improvement of living conditions in rural areas by creating RES markets, the promotion of social awareness about the responsible energy use. The agency has extensive experience in EU projects implementation and has participated in the preparation and application of more than 40 projects funded under different EU programmes.
