The University ROMA TRE is active since 1992 and actually represents a central point of reference in the academic scenario at both local and national level, hosting nearly 40,000 students. The research area is formed of 12 Departments offering a wide range of degree and post-degree courses (about 70 degree courses, 22 PhDs and 80 post-degree courses) and concentrating on the quality of the teaching and the introduction of its students into the labour market. The Department of Architecture consists in 64 teaching staff members, with 2 PhDs and 7 third level masters. The Planning Unit comprises 7 professors. There are currently research grants on topics related to landscape planning, climate change and GIS. Teachers and researchers are active in major international associations of experts in the field.

The Department is a founding member of UNISCAPE – European Network of Universities, for the implementation of the European Landscape Convention, established in 2008, and a member of AESOP (Association of the European Schools of Planning). It is strengthening its institutional and cultural connections with international Universities, both European (Madrid, Paris, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Lausanne, Porto, Valladolid, Granada, Barcelona, Vienna, Hamburg, Athens, Mendrisio) and extra-European (Moscow, Columbia, Houston, Farq-Uruguay, New York University, UTalca- Chile, UCLA-Los Angeles), as well as with national and international cultural institutions in Rome.
